Techniques - Creating shari
Shari is the loss of bark from the trunk, and in nature is caused by lightning, disease, typhoons, or other elements of nature and so can also be used on bonsai, but you should attempt to make it look as natural as possible.

Peeling back the bark

Hand tools were used to split back the branches on this Yew tree as this gives a rougher and more natural finish.

Later on when the tree is being refined then power tools will be used to improve this.

Care must be taken not to remove bark close to a living branch as this will kill the branch. If you are removing a lot of the bark then it is better to do this over several seaons.
